BRIEF
Probe is an annual art and politics magazine that explores stories at the intersection of creative expression and social discourse. Each issue features a diverse range of artists and perspectives, making visual sensitivity and editorial discipline essential.
The goal of the publication design was not to impose a visual style, but to amplify and extend the work of the contributing artists through considered layout, composition, and typographic treatment.
DESIGN APPROACH
My approach was rooted in deep engagement with the original artworks. Rather than treating art as static content placed within a grid, I studied each artist’s visual language and identified strong elements that could be echoed and extended throughout the publication.
These elements informed:
-
Graphic accents and visual motifs
-
Image alignment and rhythm across spreads
-
Composition and pacing of content
-
The intentional use of image bleed and overlap
By allowing images to flow into one another and across page boundaries, the layout created visual conversations between works, reinforcing thematic connections while maintaining each artist’s integrity.
Typography and structure were deliberately restrained, serving as a stabilizing framework that allowed the artwork to lead. The role of design was to create coherence and flow, not distraction.
OUTCOME
The final publication struck a balance between expression and structure. The design elevated the artwork by giving it space, movement, and context, while guiding readers through complex and often provocative content.
This project reflects my belief that strong editorial design is an act of listening. By responding thoughtfully to the work of others, design can become a quiet collaborator that deepens meaning and strengthens impact.
